Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a harvest festival whose roots lie in religious and cultural traditions. These days, when celebrating this classic holiday, we are more likely to engage in showing gratitude than pondering the holiday’s historical significance.

Thanksgiving has also become synonymous with family, friends and of course, food. The opportunity that Thanksgiving offers to reflect on our blessings makes it the perfect time to get the family involved in the spirit of giving. Here are some suggestions:

  1. Prepare a Thanksgiving meal and donate it to a local food bank – getting everyone involved in the kitchen work is fun. Younger kids can help wash fruits and vegetables or package the meal components.
  2. Give to a charity – money is the most common form of donation but household items, school supplies or toys are also good options. Find out what your local charity prefers.
  3. Volunteer - The opportunities are endless. Animal shelters and soup kitchens can be good choices for families with kids.
  4. Visit a seniors residence – Some older folks don’t get many visitors and are keen to welcome guests.

This year, of course, it’s especially important to show our gratitude to frontline workers. Nurses, doctors and grocery store clerks all deserve recognition. Find out if your local hospital accepts home-cooked meals for staff, or offer to sponsor restaurant take-out if that’s what they prefer. Also make sure to wish the employees at your grocery store a good holiday.

Take time for yourself. Celebrate your accomplishments over the past year and take special note when things have gone your way. Use the time to disconnect from your electronic devices and instead connect with others around you. Look around, note the state of your relationships and vow to strengthen them in the year ahead. It’ll be interesting to look back on things next Thanksgiving!
